The first official cupcake store in India, Butterfly, which opened in January 2010, was born over a cup of coffee shared by Sarah Jane Dias (former Channel V VJ and Miss India 2007) and Shaana Gwynne (pastry chef). Shaana says the inspiration came while strolling through the
streets of London. “I happened to mention to
Sarah that I wanted to open a cupcakes store.
She loved the idea and the cupcakes that I baked
for her. It was Sarah who zeroed in on the location,
giving shape to my dream. And Butterfly took off from there.”
Though Butterfly, a favourite hangout of the
young and restless and children tugging on to mama’s arms, has everything from Classic Vanilla to Coconut Almond, to Hazelnut Swirl and Oreo Cupcakes and the seasonal Very Berry (with strawberry, blueberry and raspberry filling), it’s the Butterfly Cupcake that scores big time.

Their signature cupcake, the Butterfly Cupcake is a rich Chocolate cupcake with a gourmet Chocolate Truffle centre and is topped with a fresh Vanilla Bean frosting.
However, Sarah Jane’s absolute favourite is the
Tiramisu Cupcake. She says, “I am a hardcore
Tiramisu fan. So, Shaana took the Tiramisu and put it in a cupcake, clubbing both my favourite desserts, the cupcake and Tiramisu.”
Shaana says that she personally shops for edible glitter and other ingredients in London. Butterfly plans to open more outlets very soon in South Mumbai, Juhu and Andheri.
