As ‘Going
Green’
becomes
a fashion
statement,
concrete
buildings
give way to
eco-friendly
homes

What started as a philosophy by famed architect
Laurie Baker is now becoming a fashion statement among the ‘Being Green’, people who want to make a difference to the world in whatever small way they can, especially NRIs who are returning home after earning their booty. They are all opting to reside in harmony with nature, living in homes which leave less carbon footprints.
Leading the silent crusade are people in India’s Silicon Valley, Bengalaru, wherein in the last five years itself, over 6,000 such homes have come into existence and the numbers are rising.into

existence and the numbers are rising. Keeping pace with the ‘City of Garden’ are also places like Auroville, Kochi, Thiruvunanthapuram, Kuroor, Warangal, Chennai, etc.
Bengalaru-based architect Chitra Vishwanath, who has been popularising the concept of mud houses for the last two decades and has built over 600 mud and eco-friendly houses, says, ‘‘I have always believed in designing to suit the ecology of surroundings. If mud houses suit it, then mud houses. If not, then make it as eco-friendly as
one can.’’
