happy and contend. We believe her and Christl Kurz, whose pioneering organic cuisine gives us our most outstanding ‘dining in the meadows’ treat.
Driving past the petite village of Berchtesgaden and it’s neatly perched, flower-fluffed Alpine wooden chalets, the community church and a few boutiques, we see locals going about their lives in a slow-paced momentum. Roadside fruit stalls offering lusciously ripe strawberries, plums, apples and berries draw our attention, as we admire the cheer and welcoming affability of rose-cheeked Frauleins.

From the wide-angled windows of the fabulous Intercontinental Berchtesgaden Resort, we spot a lone chalet on a lone hilltop, glowing with an intense amber glow,
a biergarten brimming with boisterous revelers.
On a verdant hillock, a sturdy, hatted seventy-year-old Erica muscles up her weather-weary tractor, as farm implements rattle in her back boot. Some do it hard and tough. Above on the horizon, our star accommodation awaits us.
Settling down to a crisp fine dining sojourn at Le Ciel on the breezy alfresco terrace of this premium property overlooking the gorgeous Alpine snowline,
we raise a toast to the panoramas of Berchtesgaden with chilled flutes of a 2007 Lombard Brut Champagne. As we whisper ‘Zum Wohl’, a row of weekend bikers alight below us, their ‘thumbs up’ greeting our spirit.
Do we hear a faint, distant horn echoing in the valleys yonder? Probably the cows returning home. Azure streaks give way to snow-flitted mauves and deep crimson. The night creeps in with tip-toeing timidity. We have arrived. Danke Schoen.
