Well, that was the
motto of Yves Saint
Laurent, who broke
all the known rules
of design, colour
and fashion

At 19, Algerian born Yves Henri Donat Mathieu Saint-Laurent went to Paris and entered a competition - sponsored by the International Wood Secretariat - and won the first prize for a cocktail dress. Soon he was hired by Christian Dior as design assistant. After Dior’s death, he became the chief-designer of Dior’s house. In 1961, the house of Dior split up with Yves and the same year he launched his brand with his lifetime companion Pierre Berge. Yves Saint Laurent presented the first collection under his own name. It was a success, and he was hailed as a genius. A workaholic, Yves created four collections in an year and surprised everyone each time with a new style. Yves’ basic idea was to break down the barriers of design, the everyday illusion of combinations of colours and clothes. He was the first designer who combined orange with pink and red, violet with yellow, black with brown. Considered a revolutionary, in his clothes one could find styles of artists like Picasso, Warhol and Mondrian. The life on the streets and the arts were the strongest influences on his work. His most surprising creation was the ‘Smoking for women’ in which he took the basic cut of the male wardrobe and changed them into female lines and also gave them a touch of eroticism. Not for nothing that YSL was known as ‘King of Fashion’.
